News and Opinion Links

I don’t get it. I have been on a news fast for the past week, and I still wound up with a pile of news and opinion pieces to talk about. I guess it is just inevitable. Also, I think I suck at avoiding current events. At least I have still managed to avoid Twitter. Anyway, let’s get on with it.

— I’m going to have to re-read this one to fully grasp it, but it is a very interesting article. It is a discussion of the often used academic slogan “decolonize your syllabus,” and its pitfalls. The author suggests that emphasis on simple cultural diversity alone actually aids the neocolonial project. Instead, the author suggests attempting to build solidarity.

— Lin Wood might be disbarred. The slew of frivolous lawsuits he and others filed over the election seems to have raised the ire of the State Bar of Georgia. Wood’s response was to post the addresses of the officials that will be reviewing his case, calling on his “army of patriots” to help him dig up dirt on these poor bastards. Wood is a vocal advocate of QAnon, a movement which the article notes is indulging in more and more violent rhetoric as of late.

Here is a Daily Beast article on a new round of infighting among the far right. The proud boys in particular seem to be splintering from the national organization after the revelation that Enrique Tarrio, their leader, was a police and FBI informant. There are also other cases of infighting as a result of a federal crackdown after the January 6th riots. Fighting amongst themselves is what the far-right does best, but this might get interesting. Something to keep an eye on.

Here’s another one from the Daily Beast. Ruben Verastigui, a former Trump aide, was arrested on child porn charges. I don’t normally do content warnings, mostly because no one reads this blog, but the article covers some disturbing shit, so be forewarned.

— I’m still working my way through this, but I thought I would post it. It’s an excerpt from a new book called Border and Rule: Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism. I think I might pick this up when it comes out in paperback, but only because I’m broke. Otherwise, I would pick it up as soon as possible. It looks worthwhile.

That’s all I’m going to post today. I’m sure I’ll have more for you very soon. In the meantime, I think I’m going to continue avoiding the news and try to get some reading done. Good luck out there.
